While Shenmue 3 didn’t exactly live up to expectations, Yu Suzuke’s grand story will soon be told through another medium. Back in 2020, a Shenmue anime was announced to be in the works and now, it will be coming to Crunchyroll next year.
Shenmue: The Animation is an anime series based on Shenmue 1 and 2, with Yu Suzuki working with the writers to incorporate previously scrapped story elements. The series is being produced by Crunchyroll and Adult Swim, so it will air on Toonami in the US, and it will be available via streaming on Crunchyroll worldwide.
This week, the first trailer for the series released, revealing the 2022 release date. The series will run for 13 episodes, covering events from the first two Shenmue games, while expanding the story in certain areas. One Punch Man director, Chikara Sakurai, is also directing the series.
That is all we know for now, but we expect to hear more early next year.
KitGuru Says: The first two Shenmue games are very dated at this point, so being able to experience the story in a new form, like an anime, seems like a good idea. Will any of you be watching this next year?
